Circumstances

Hello all,
Welcome to second summer. The warm temperatures have returned! I suppose most of us would expect some hot days in early September. After all, it is State Fair time.

The worst part of my current health situation has been a loss of appetite. Food has no appeal and tastes nothing like I remember. My own cooking even tastes awful! If there is an up-side, it is that I have lost a few pounds. Along with that, I want to sleep a lot, and naps are a large part of my days.

In times like this, it is easy to see only the situation we are in and focus on the negative. The medicines I am taking are having their intended effect, but there are unpleasant side-effects. Keeping in mind the end result is of great importance.

Many times, in our Christian walk, we endure times that are difficult, and it is hard to keep our thoughts directed toward heaven. As someone once said when asked how they were doing answered, I’m doing okay under the circumstances. His friend said, “What are you doing? Get out from under there!”

Our joy in life does not come from our circumstances. In poverty or in wealth, our true joy should be in our relationship with the Lord. When King David was in the desert, hiding from his enemies, he wrote the following:
“O God, you are my God, earnestly I seek you; my soul thirsts for you, my body longs for you, in a dry and weary land where there is no water. I have seen you in the sanctuary and beheld your power and your glory. Because your love is better than life, my lips will glorify you. I will praise you as long as I live, and in your name I will lift up my hands.
My soul will be satisfied as with the richest of foods; with singing lips my mouth will praise you. On my bed I remember you; I think of you through the watches of the night.
Because you are my help, I sing in the shadow of your wings. My soul clings to you; your right hand upholds me” (Psalm 63:1-8).

So, in those difficult times we must not keep our eyes on our circumstances but keep looking up to Jesus. He is our peace, our hope and joy.

God is Good All the Time

Hello friends, Another week has come and gone. We received just over an inch of rain Sunday morning, so no watering of the lawn and garden for a few days. I’m still adjusting to my new medicines and will go to Grand Island to see my vascular specialist on Tuesday. There will be a scan, and he will determine where we go from here. What follows is an excerpt from a devotional by J.D Grear.

Sometimes, as Christians, we don’t fully realize all that God has done for us. We take His blessings in our lives for granted far too often. God is faithful. God is good. And God is consistent.

The Bible promises that God will not just pardon us for our sin but will abundantly pardon us. Isaiah 55:7 tells us, “Let the wicked change their ways and banish the very thought of doing wrong. Let them turn to the Lord that he may have mercy on them. Yes, turn to our God, for he will forgive generously” (NLT). Not only is God able to do what we ask of Him through prayer, but according to Ephesians 3:20, He is able to “accomplish infinitely more than we might ask or think” (NLT). Not only are we conquerors in Christ, but according to Romans 8:37, “we are more than conquerors” (NIV). He gives us not just peace but a peace that “exceeds anything we can understand” (Philippians 4:7 NLT).

The psalmist and shepherd David was able to look back on his life and say, “My cup overflows with blessings. Surely your goodness and unfailing love will pursue me all the days of my life, and I will live in the house of the Lord forever” (Psalm 23:5–6 NLT). As Christians look back at their lives, if they have been walking closely with God, they’re able to see a pattern of God’s blessings over the years.

Sometimes, when we’re going through certain situations, we may not see God’s goodness or mercy. In fact, we may even question God on occasion. But as the years pass, as we look back, we can see God’s hand in our lives in a way that perhaps we couldn’t see it before. And we can look back and see the same thing. Really, the Christian life is the greatest life there is. It is better than anything this world has to offer.

True Assurance

Dear friends,

We have been experiencing some fall-like temperatures. This is a welcome change from the hot days of recent weeks. I continue to recover from my stay in the hospital. The medication seems to be working, but I am soooo tired. Naps are frequent lol!

I have had much time recently to reflect on my life’s journey. From the early days when I was unaware of my need for Jesus in my life, to the day I came to the realization that he was all I needed. In these days of uncertainty, it is so encouraging to know that He is in total control. Whether it is the craziness of our world or turmoil in my own situation, the Lord of the universe will work it out for his glory. There are scriptures that encourage and strengthen us in our walk through this life. I will share them with you this week.

“I lie down and sleep; I wake again, because the Lord sustains me. I will not fear the tens of thousands drawn up against me on every side” (Psalm 3:5-6). “I will lie down and sleep in peace, for you alone, O Lord, make me dwell in safety” (Psalm 4:8).

“My son, preserve sound judgment and discernment, do not let them out of your sight; they will be life for you, an ornament to grace your neck. Then you will go on your way in safety, and your foot will not stumble; when you lie down, you will not be afraid; when you lie down, your sleep will be sweet. Have no fear of sudden disaster or of the ruin that overtakes the wicked, for the Lord will be your confidence and will keep your foot from being snared” (Proverb 3:21-26).

In the New Testament we find these words of Jesus: “Come to me all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls” (Matthew 11:28-29).

Finally, the words of Psalm 62:1-2, 5-6a, “My soul finds rest in God alone; my salvation comes from him. He alone is my rock and salvation; he is my fortress; I will never be shaken. Find rest, O my soul, in God alone; my hope comes from him.”

The Calm in the Storm

As promised, I have returned with another edition of this weekly devotional.

First, an update on my stay in Omaha last week. I was diagnosed with a dissection in my aorta (not a good thing). The first option for treatment is to lower heart rate and blood pressure. This is not an easy task, because lowering one raises the other. So, for well over a week, I’ve been the center of attention for a whole group of specialists. I have had plenty of time to reflect on the important things in life,

While here, I have been watching the life flight helicopter as it lands outside my window. As I witness these landings, I’m reminded that every day somewhere a real-life drama is being played out. As I was waiting to get a CT scan Tuesday morning, there was real drama in the imaging room; a code blue episode was playing out in front of me. It was like being in the middle of a TV program. It was a life changing episode for someone.

In all of this I am mindful of the reassuring words of Scripture. Perhaps the most familiar of these is Psalm 23: The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not be in want. He makes me lie down in green pastures, he leads me beside quiet waters, he restores my soul. He guides me in paths of righteousness for his name’s sake. Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me. You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies. You anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows. Surely goodness and love will follow me all the days of my life, and I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever.

Another passage that assures us of God’s care and protection is from Isaiah: Do not fear, for I am with you; do not be afraid, for I am your God. I will strengthen you; I will help you; I will hold on to you with My righteous right hand. Isaiah 41:10.

I know for certain that no matter what life brings, for anyone who knows Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior our final home is heaven. Do you have that assurance?

A Backward Glance

Hello friends,

Reflecting on the past can be beneficial. Early last week, we took a trip down memory lane and decided to drive past the place where we spent our first four and a half years of married life. It was sobering to see only weeds growing up where our little house used to be. There were some recognizable landmarks, but little remains of what was there. Memories came back, but I wouldn’t want to go there again.

There are some who want to live in the past, and I don’t mind visiting there now and then, but when it comes to living there, no thank you! I’m with the apostle Paul who wrote, “forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus” (Philippians 4:13-14).

I don’t believe it is wrong to take a backward glance now and then, just to be reminded of our journey to the present. There are exceptions, but to try living in the past can be disheartening, especially if we continually ask ourselves, “what if”? As Christians our focus needs to remain on the Lord Jesus, so that we don’t go astray. As one who came to faith later in life, I can look back and see God’s hand at work in my life, even as I had no idea at the time that he was directing my steps. I would not want to relive that experience, making all those mistakes over again.

Each one of us has a story, and I would hope our story would be our testimony of how God has drawn us to himself. Proverbs 16:9 tells us, “In his heart a man plans his course, but the Lord determines his steps.” Also, Proverbs 19:21: Many are the plans in a man’s heart, but it is the Lord’s purpose that prevails.

In all our moves and job changes, it is evident that God was bringing me back to the place I grew up, for me to attend the little church down the road. In that place, I learned that I needed a Savior and all my so-called works meant nothing.

Wherever you are in life, God is leading you to the place He wants you to be. Don’t mistake the journey for the destination.

Questions for God?

Dear friends,

After a few pleasant days, we are forecast to see some lower temps and possibly some rain. There is some talk of stormy weather, but we will pray that doesn’t happen. My lady got her driver’s license renewed last week, so we are both good for a few more years. Sunday, we enjoyed worship and sweet fellowship with our church family. Also, we have the pleasure of having a little girl visiting our house this week.

I have heard people say, “When I get to Heaven, I’m going to ask God this or that question.” My response is, when you get there, you will be so in awe of Him that those questions will be forgotten. Pastor Greg Laurie had some thoughts on the topic in a recent article I would like to share with you.

He writes, “I think that one second after they get to Heaven, they won’t care about those questions anymore. They will see God for who He is, and everything else will come into its proper focus.

The apostle Paul wrote, all that I see now is partial and incomplete, but then I will know everything completely, just as God now knows me completely (1 Corinthians 13:12).

Pastor Greg goes on: The most important thing to me about Heaven is that Jesus will be there… To me, heaven is about Jesus. And wherever Jesus is, that is where I want to be. Heaven will be greater than anything we have ever imagined, and the good news is that it will last forever. This is a promise to believers.

Those who don’t know Jesus ought to be afraid. I hope you know that you are going to heaven. It is not the worst thing to die. Rather, the worst thing is to die without Jesus.

It amazes me how people will go to great lengths to make sure they have things like car insurance, health insurance, homeowner’s insurance, and life insurance. But they won’t give a passing thought to their eternal assurance. The most important thing of all is what will happen to us beyond the grave. But if we wait to decide, it will be too late.

On the other hand, if you have put your trust in Christ, then you don’t have to be afraid. Your life is in God’s hands.” (Pastor Greg’s Daily Devo; April 4, 2024).

The Resurrection

As I begin this article, the weather forecast is for winter-like conditions for the next few days. I suppose we knew those nice days were only teasers. Although the calendar tells us that spring is here, we know from experience there can still be snow and cold. On a personal note, I will get new lenses for my glasses this week. I expect changes for the better after the cataract surgery. I will report on the success of that procedure in a future column.

Next Sunday is Easter Sunday. I would rather refer to it as Resurrection Day. Christians celebrate this as remembering that Jesus Christ, after being in the tomb for three days, came back from the dead to be with His disciples for a time. During this time, He met with those eleven disciples who remained after Judas met his end. Jesus assured those men that He was very much alive and would leave them to take up residence in heaven, and that they would see Him again. This is the message of the resurrection, and the hope of all who believe.

The hope spoken of is the sure knowledge that we who believe Christ died and was raised from the dead will go to heaven when we die. The writer of Hebrews says, “We have this hope as an anchor for the soul, firm and secure” (Hebrews 6:19).

Peter wrote, “Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, Because of His great mercy He has given us new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead and into an inheritance that is imperishable, undefiled, and unfading, kept in heaven for you. You are being guarded by God’s power through faith for a salvation that is ready to be revealed in the last time” (1 Peter 1:3-5).

In these difficult times, be encouraged by these words of Jesus: “Do not let your hearts be troubled. Trust in God, trust also in me. In my Father’s house are many rooms; if it were not so, I would have told you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with me that you also may be where I am” (John 14:1-3).

This is real hope; that we who believe have a home in heaven, Period!

A Better Life

Hello friends,

It is time again for another devotional thought from God’s Word. There is no lack of topics, it is just hard to decide which one to address. The weather is always a current event, but since we don’t control it there is not much we can do about it. Politics is an ever-present discussion point, or in some cases just another argument which no one wins.

Daily, we see proof of what happens when people turn their backs on God and expect life to get better. Little do they know that the answer to a better life is faith in God and in the Lord Jesus Christ.

Starting with Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden, people have disobeyed the commands of God and tried to live without Him. This leads not to an improved life, but to unnecessary hardships and a meaningless existence.

What we really need, I believe, is a return to Christian and Biblical values in every aspect of life. No human endeavor will solve the problems we face, only renewed faith in our Creator will bring the solutions we seek.

“But eagerly desire the greater gifts. And now I will show you the most excellent way. (1 Corinthians 12:31).

Above all, fear the Lord and worship Him faithfully with all your heart; consider the great things He has done for you (1 Samuell 12:24).

“Even now,” declares the Lord, “return to me with all your heart, with fasting and weeping and mourning” Zechariah 1:3).

This is what the Lord Almighty says: “Return to me,” declares the Lord Almighty, “and I will return to you,” says the Lord Almighty (Malachi 3:7).

Jesus’ words: “So do not worry, saying, ‘what shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ For the pagans run after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows you need them. But seek first His kingdom and His righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well. Therefore do not worry about tomorrow for tomorrow will worry about itself” (Matthew 6:33).

God said to Jeremiah: “This is what the Lord says, He who made the earth, the Lord who formed it and established it—the Lord is His name: ‘Call to me and I will answer you and tell you great and unsearchable things you do not know” (Jeremiah 33:2-3).

In God We Trust

We are experiencing some unusual weather for this time of the year. Temperatures are above normal, and it makes me wonder what is coming. I have seen some nasty winter-like weather in March and early April, so don’t put away those snow shovels just yet! More than once we experienced below zero temps and snow during calving time, which was in the month of March. I’m chilled just thinking about it.

I notice As I read the news each day, that the opponents of Jesus Christ and His followers are becoming more vocal each day. We are threatened with censorship, with legal action and other kinds of persecution. I would encourage everyone who claims the name of Jesus to stand firm in the faith. It looks scary at times, but I am reminded that the same God who protected Daniel in the lion’s den, who kept Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego from burning up in the fiery furnace and saved  David from lions and giants (think Goliath), is the same God who protects us from our enemies today.

When threatened by king Nebuchadnezzar with the fiery furnace, the three Hebrew children said, “If the God we serve exists, then he can rescue us from the furnace of blazing fire… but even if he does not rescue us… we will not serve your gods.” (Daniel 3:17-18).

Daniel’s testimony to king Darius after being freed from the lion’s den was this: ‘My God sent his angel and shut the lion’s mouths; and they have not harmed me, for I was found innocent before Him” (Daniel 6:21).

When David faced the giant Goliath, he said, “You come against me with sword and spear and javelin, but I come against you in the name of the Lord Almighty, the God of the armies of Israel, whom you have defied. This day the Lord will hand you over to me…, all those gathered here will know that it is not by sword or spear the Lord saves; for the battle is the Lord’s and He will give all of you into our hands” (1 Samuel 17:45-47).

The battle is not ours to win; our part is to stand firm on the Word of the Lord and His promises. As we read the book of Revelation, we find that despite the devil’s attempts to destroy God’s people, in the end we win.

Giving/Receiving

Hello friends,

After a busy week, it is good to spend Sunday afternoon relaxing and reviewing the past few days. Maria has gone back to her mom, dad, and baby brother. We enjoyed her visit, but we are not as young as we once were. I had my first cataract surgery on Thursday. I’m surprised by the improvement in my sight and looking forward to getting the other one done in two weeks. As the song writer has said, “I can see clearly now” (at least in one eye)!

Last week, I wrote about giving to God and quoted Jesus’ words on giving. “Seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.” (Matthew 6:33):

The apostle Paul wrote, “And my God will supply all your needs according to his riches in glory in Christ Jesus” (Philippians 4:19 CSB).

Notice Paul said that God would supply all your needs—not all your greed, or even all your wants or desires.

The writer of Proverbs 30 prayed, “Give me neither poverty nor wealth! Feed me with the food I need. Otherwise, I might have too much and deny you, saying, ‘Who is the Lord?” or I might have nothing and steal, profaning the name of my God” (verses 8–9 CSB).

You see, God is not some celestial Santa Claus giving us all the things on our wish list. Contrary to the idea that we do not get the things we want because our faith is weak, faith allows us to wait upon the Lord and depend on His goodness and grace to provide the things we really need. I have found the things we think we cannot live without are things that would do us harm if we were allowed to get them.

From Hebrews we read, “Now faith is being sure of what we hope for and certain of what we do not see” (Hebrews 10:11).

“So, we fix our eyes on what is seen, but on what is unseen. For what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal “(2 Corinthians 4:18).

The bottom line is, believe in God, He is faithful and true. Trust in Him and see how He supplies your needs. There is a big difference between what we want and what we need. God knows which is best for us.
