Happy Thanksgiving

Dear friends,

We have been enjoying some great fall weather, but there is a cool-down in the forecast. We have no room to complain about the weather to this point. With the Thanksgiving holiday coming this week, we have plenty to give thanks for.

In family news, the adoption of our great-granddaughter is complete. She takes great pleasure in telling everyone, “My name is Maria Schoenenberger.” We were excited to be able to attend the court proceeding finalizing this blessing. It was a great day, finished off with cake and ice cream. Also, I saw my cardiologist on Wednesday last week, and he said to come back in six months.

All of this reminds me to give thanks to the Lord daily. Every day holds some new or repeated blessing from Him. Continuing a thought from last week, how could anyone deny the existence of a loving and caring God, when there is so much evidence of his presence?

I understand that not everything that happens to us is something we would consider a blessing. Some things are far from being pleasant or pleasing, but if our faith is in God through a relationship with Jesus, those things are meant for our good. I’m reminded of a passage of scripture that speaks to this issue.

“And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose” (Romans 8:28). We should not stop with the first part of that verse, but understand the promise is not for everyone, only those who love God, and are called by God to be conformed to the likeness of His Son. That happens as a result of placing our faith in the resurrected Son of God.

We come now to verse 35: “Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall trouble or hardship or persecution or famine or nakedness or danger or sword? Paul says, “No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us” (Romans 8:35-39).

Life is filled with both blessings and hardships. Scripture reminds us that there will be suffering, but in good times and bad if we have placed our faith in the Lord, we can give thanks to Him in every situation.

Thanks be to God for His indescribable gift! (1 Corinthians 9:15)

Contentment

Dear friends,

In weather news, as predicted earlier in the week winter has arrived. Cold and snow were the words of the week. We had a small amount here at the lake, but others had more. Another arrival happened this week, also. Our new great-grandson made his appearance on Friday. Mom, Dad, and baby are doing well as of last report. He weighed nine pounds and is named Maverick Wayne Schoenenberger. Quite a handle for one so small, but I’m sure he will grow into it.

I have been holding down the fort here at home while Milrae has been with Alex’s family in South Dakota. His work takes him out of town for a couple of days a week, and Breanna wanted someone to stay with her. I expect she will be coming home soon. Our camper is up there, but it has been winterized and may stay there for a while.

As I age, I find it easier to see good things around me that I probably overlooked when I was younger. There is a tendency to be more content, I suppose because I don’t feel like I must be chasing some dream. I’m not fast enough to catch one and wouldn’t know what to do if I did. It has gotten to the point where I can’t even find anything in the farm supply catalog I want or “need”.

I am just content with what I have and where I am. Part of this comes from understanding that God will supply my needs. Even when I didn’t know it, he always provided. Sometimes by not giving me what I thought I couldn’t live without, and other times giving me things I didn’t know I needed.

Here are some verses of scripture I have come to love. “You will keep in perfect peace him whose mind is steadfast, because he trusts in you. Trust in the Lord forever, for the Lord, the Lord, is the Rock eternal” (Isaiah 26:3-4). “My soul finds rest in God alone; my salvation comes from him. He alone is my rock and salvation; he is my fortress, I will never be shaken” (Psalm 62:1-2). “But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well. Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself” (Matthew 6:33-34).

God Speaks in Creation

Dear friends,

We were able to get in a couple of days away with the camper. We didn’t go far, but it was enjoyable just to do something different. I wonder how long we will be able to do this, and I am not really looking forward to the time we can’t. I keep telling myself we live by a pretty little lake in a beautiful part of God’s creation, so what is the need for a camper?

More random thoughts as I looked out my window: Sunrise is special from the window of a camper. Any sunrise signals the beginning of a new day. We should be grateful for each sunrise and the promise it brings. The following Psalm reminds us that both creation and God’s Word testify to his existence and sovereignty, if anyone should doubt.

“The heavens declare the glory of God, and the expanse proclaims the work of his hands. Day after day they pour out speech; night after night they communicate knowledge. There is no speech; there are no words; their voice is not heard. Their message has gone out to the whole earth, and their words to the ends of the world.

In the heavens he has pitched a tent for the sun. It is like a bridegroom coming from his home; it rejoices like an athlete running a course. It rises from one end of the heavens and circles to their outer end; nothing is hidden from its heat.”

The instruction of the Lord is perfect, renewing one’s life, the testimony of the Lord is trustworthy, making the inexperienced wise. The precepts of the Lord are right, making the heart glad; the command of the Lord is radiant, making the eyes light up. The fear of the Lord is pure, enduring forever; the ordinances of the Lord are reliable and altogether righteous. They are more desirable than gold—than an abundance of pure gold, and sweeter than honey dripping from a honeycomb. In addition, your servant is warned by them, and in keeping them there is an abundant reward” (Psalm 19:1-11).

One more random thought from my early morning meditations: Someday Jesus will return, not to get opinions, but to set up his kingdom. Jesus’ words, “Look I am coming soon, and my reward is with me to repay each person according to his work” (Revelation 22:12).

Harvest Fields

Dear friends,

Once again I find that plans can change without warning. Now and then I write one of these from some hospital room, as is the case this week. I got up early Saturday morning feeling a little different, went to the ER in Ord and ended up in Kearney with some heart issues. Diagnosis; a-fib and a small pulmonary embolism (clot). Sunday I had a heart cath that showed my previous bypasses are still open. Sooo—going forward it will be blood thinners and beta blockers. I’m glad I listened to the “small, still voice”.

I had my sermon prepared early, but no one volunteered to deliver it. Not to worry though, it will still apply next week. God’s Word applies to all of life every day all the time. Christians are commanded to take gospel of Jesus Christ into all the world. Jesus told his disciples “the fields are ripe for harvest”.

When he saw the crowds, he felt compassion for them, because they were distressed and dejected, like sheep without a shepherd. Then he said to his disciples, “The harvest is abundant, but the workers are few. Therefore, pray to the Lord of the harvest to send out workers into his harvest.”(Matthew 9:46-48). They were to pray for workers to harvest souls, but they had a responsibility to work the harvest, as well. We, also are called to pray for gospel witnesses as we work the ripening fields of our day.

Where are these fields in which we are to be working? Someone has said we need to be looking at who is in front of us. These are those whom God has placed in our immediate path. This weekend, I have had several chances to share my witness and testimony with those who haveprovided for my care and treatment. What harvest field has the Lord placed you in? The supermarket? The school or playground? What about the livestock auction or a campground?

In doing this, I have found new Christian friends! The possibilities are endless. Who is in front of you? What is preventing you from joining the harvest? Just some thoughts from my crazy weekend.

Subject to Change

Dear friends,

We were blessed with more rain this week. This is a great help for the lawn and garden as it keeps the watering at a minimum. I mentioned last week that we had ordered a recliner for the camper; it has been put in its place and now we are anticipating another outing somewhere in the future. Looking at the weather forecast, we may wait for cooler weather.

Everyone has their hopes and dreams of how they see the future, and the things they expect will happen. It doesn’t take long to realize that dreams and plans are one thing, but reality many times takes some strange twists and turns.

The Bible book of James has something to say about our plans. From chapter 4 we read: Come now, you who say, “today or tomorrow we will travel to such and such a city and spend a year there and do business and make a profit.” Yet you do not know what tomorrow will bring—what your life will be! For you are like vapor that appears for a little while, then vanishes. Instead, you should say, “if the Lord wills, we will live and do this or that” (James 4:13-15).

Here is wisdom from the book of Proverbs; Commit your activities to the Lord, and your plans will be established (Proverbs 16:3). A person’s heart plans his way, but the Lord determines his steps (16:6).

God has a plan for each of us. He gives us a mind to plan for our days and years, but he wants us to seek his direction as we make those plans. And don’t be surprised when his plans turn out to be different than ours. I can testify that the plans I had for my own life did not go in the direction I had envisioned. But guess what? I am convinced that his plan was much better than mine.

When we come to faith in Christ, God begins to shape us into the person he has planned us to be. As Paul wrote in his letter to the church at Philippi, “I am sure of this, that he who started a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus (Philippians 1:6).

So, go ahead and make those plans, but leave room for the Lord to make changes.

Want or Need?

Last week was nice, not too hot and with some nice rain. Sunday morning was much cooler; something about a cold front passing through the area. It made me think of fall, but I know this was wishful thinking. There is a very real possibility of a return to summer temps. We made a trip to Grand Island last week. We had been discussing the possibility of putting recliners in the camper in place of the very uncomfortable love seat/hide-a-bed. We made a purchase and of course, there wasn’t one in stock so we will wait a few days then go back to pick it up. Life at the lake is great, but sometimes we seek entertainment in other places.

On the topic of seeking whatever we might see as a need, I have found that needs and wants are two very different things. My life has been littered with things I wanted because I thought I needed them. After obtaining them, reality showed them as merely wants and they ended up in some scrap pile. Money spent foolishly because of a want that wasn’t really a need.

People chase after all kinds of things they think they can’t live without, only to be disappointed in the end. King Solomon in the Old Testament book of Ecclesiastes had much to say about this. He said this: “I denied myself nothing my eyes desired; I refused my heart no pleasure. My heart took delight in all my work, and this was the reward for my labor. Yet when I surveyed all that my hands had done and what I had toiled to achieve, everything was meaningless, a chasing after the wind. Nothing was gained under the sun” (Ecclesiastes 1:10-11).

Further in the book Solomon continued: “Whoever loves money never has enough; whoever loves wealth is never satisfied with his income. This too is meaningless. As goods increase, so do those who consume them. And what benefit are they to the owner except to feast his eyes on them (5:10-11)?

He ends the book with these words: “Now all has been heard; here is the conclusion of the matter: Fear God and keep his commandments, for this is the whole duty of man. For God will bring every deed into judgment, including every hidden thing whether it is good or evil” (Ecclesiastes 12:13-14).

Re-Creation

Dear friends,

Weekends at the lake remain busy. From Friday to Sunday, the river, the lake, and the streets are filled with people enjoying the summer days. The rest of the week is less busy, but there are still those who can get away for a few days. As someone who used to see Sunday as just another day to work, I wonder how many give a thought to the Lord on His day as they seek recreation and enjoy God’s creation.

The word ‘recreation’ gives the idea of something being re-created, that is, to be restored or made new. One would think that God’s command to observe a day of rest might remind us that we need rest from our work. God did not rest because he was tired, he did it as an example for us to follow. That one day was set aside for God’s people to focus on Him. There was to be no work, but time to honor the Creator.

In the Ten Commandments, there was not only the one concerning a day of rest, but there was also one that forbade the worship of idols. An idol is anything that takes the place of God in worship. Could the lake become an idol? How about a nice bass boat, or maybe the sporting event that keeps us from attending worship service on the Lord’s Day? (Exodus 20:1-9).                

Our work becomes an idol if it keeps us from putting God first in our lives. I used to ask the question, if I feel I need to be making hay on Sunday, is that Bale worship (play on words there); or if I think I need to be present when each calf is born, is that worshiping the calf? Remember, Israel got in a heap of trouble with a golden calf idol.

I’m not trying to lay a guilt trip on anyone here, just a reminder to check our priorities to see if there is something that is taking the place God has reserved for Himself. I am not opposed to taking time to renew and recharge our batteries, so to speak. I am just encouraging you to take time to put the important thing at the top of the list. Everything else will fall into its proper place and God will be given what He desires from his people, their worship.

Freedom

Dear friends,

It’s another of those early copy weeks, so I will try to write something that makes sense on short notice. I am back to normal after my visit to the fine medical professionals in Omaha last week. I am continually impressed by the gifted doctors, nurses and others who have chosen to make medicine their career choice. I have nothing but highest regard for every one of them.

The Independence Day holiday will be celebrated in grand style here at Lake Ericson and in the village of Ericson. We have it all, from fireworks to food, from parades to a junior rodeo. There is an avenue of flags along the lake front that is nothing but inspiring. There are games at the lake and a street dance in town. A visit to our little community is well worth your time.

As we read and hear the negative news about what is going on in our country, it is easy to become disillusioned with the things that we see. I believe the USA has been, is today, and will be in the future the best country in the world. Who we are and how we came to be what we are as a country is why we can celebrate this thing called Independence Day.

As we celebrate, we must not become complacent, but be ever vigilant to defend our God-given rights and freedoms. Let us be informed about government and politics and raise our voices in support of the Constitution and the American way. As Christians, we cannot sit idly by while the enemies of morality and the truth of God’s Word trample them in the dust.

In Galatians we are told that through faith in Christ we have been set free from the bondage of sin. We are also reminded not to use that freedom to keep sinning, but to serve one another in love (Galatians 5:1, 13).

Also, we find this command: Live as free men, but do not use your freedom as a cover-up for evil; live as servants of God. Show proper respect to everyone; Love the brotherhood of believers, fear God, honor the king (1 Peter 2:16-17).

So, on Independence Day and every day, stand tall and be proud of our country. Thank God for those who founded and defended her, and pray God bless America, again!

Justified

Dear readers,

We have received wonderful rain! Amounts vary, but most places near to us have seen some moisture. Friday and Saturday our gauge showed just over 1.5 inches. The garden is happy! The camper has been cleansed of the evidence left behind by some mice who lived there last winter. We are now ready for the next adventure. Several memories were made on the last journey, most of which centered around the absent mindedness of a certain elderly man.

The Bible tells us that when a person puts his or her faith in Jesus Christ for salvation, that person is declared righteous because God sees that person as being covered by the righteousness of Christ. The term used is justification. What follows are some results of the believer being justified in the eyes of God.

We have peace. “Therefore, since we have been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ.” (Romans 5:1) There was a time we were God’s enemies because of unbelief, now in Christ we have peace with God (Romans 5:10). Peace with God means our problem with sin has been settled by the blood of Christ.

We have access to God. “Through whom we have gained access by faith into the grace in which we now stand” (Romans 5:2a) Before our salvation we were condemned; but now in Christ, we have perfect standing before God and can enter his presence (Hebrews 10:19-25).

We have hope. “And we rejoice in the hope of the glory of God” (Romans 5:2b). The unsaved person is “without hope” (Ephesians 2:11-12). Through faith in Christ, we have the sure knowledge of eternity with him.

We have confidence in the trials of life. “Not only so, but we also rejoiced in our sufferings” (Romans 5:3). We know for certain that in those trials God is with us, because of our relationship with Christ (Romans 5:3-4).

We experience the love of God. “But God demonstrates His own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us” (Romans 5:8). God showed us his love at the cross when Christ died for those who were without strength, who were ungodly, sinners, and enemies, thus proving His great love.

This is the gospel of Jesus Christ, who came as the only one who could save us from our sin. Hallelujah! What a Savior!

Enjoying Life

Dear friends,

We had an enjoyable weekend with Alex, Breanna, and Maria. We were supposed to park the camper on a new concrete pad at their house, but Alex sent a message early Friday morning to inform me they had received heavy rains in the night. This resulted in making reservations at the local KOA, and when I saw Alex’s driveway, I was glad I did. I helped him add handrails on the outdoor stairs and a railing around the landing. It looked nice when we were done, not elegant but functional for sure.

When we got the camper set up, we discovered that some furry rodents had been living in the kitchen drawers over winter. This is not something you wish to find when looking forward to a relaxing evening. There will be some serious cleaning done now that we are home again. There were some other incidents that resulted from my not paying attention, but more on those in another column.

In our recent travels, we have noticed an abundance of yucca plants. They are blooming profusely this year. It is just my thinking, but I wonder if it is because of the drought conditions? Some plants thrive in those situations, including most cactus plants. In areas where there has been rain, the pastures and meadows are doing well also. Rain always improves a lot of things, including the attitudes of farmers and ranchers.

As we travel and observe creation, I am taken to the words of David in Psalm 145: I exalt you, my God the King, and bless your name forever and ever.

I will bless you every day; I will praise your name forever and ever.

The Lord is great and is highly praised, his greatness is highly praised,

His greatness is unsearchable.

One generation will declare your works the next and will proclaim your   mighty acts.

I will speak of your splendor and glorious majesty and you and your wondrous works.

They will give testimony of your great goodness and will joyfully sing of   your righteousness.

The Lord is gracious and compassionate, slow to anger and great in faithful love.

The Lord is good to everyone; his compassion rests on all he has made.

All you have made will thank you, Lord; the faithful will bless you.
